The Shift from Blackboard to Digital Board

AV in Education: a market to watch

The impact of AV technology on our learning environments has been nothing short of noteworthy. In the last decade, technology coupled with internet penetration has greatly influenced the manner in which education is imparted.

The education sector is poised for a paradigm shift with technology being the main catalyst. Centres for learning across India are today using projection and interactive display to augment the student’s learning experience. With more than 20 lakh schools, around 40 thousand colleges and other vocational training centres, the demand for smart classrooms is on the upward trajectory, which according to reports is expected to reach $6 billion USD by 2020.

Reports suggest that about 50% of projectors sold globally are absorbed by classrooms, and 25% of the budget in a multimedia-based classroom goes into the purchase of projectors.

Even in India, projectors are one of the fastest selling product lines, with the education segment being the main driving force. Government initiatives like Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan in various states and ICT@Schools scheme which aims to have atleast one multi-media lab in each school, is leading to the purchases of projectors for government schools. Ceratin reports peg the numbers at around 100K units of projectors being io nstalled annually across India’s classrooms.

While presenting the annual financial statement for the year 2018-19, recognising the impact of multi-media learning, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley announced the RISE (Revitalising of Infrastructure and Systems in Education) initiative, which would mobilise a total investment of Rs 1 lakh crore in the education sector by 2022. As part of the RISE initiative, amongst others, the government also plans to increase the digital intensity in the education sector. According to Jaitley technology is the biggest driver in improving the quality of education and the increase in digital intensity in education was intended to gradually move from blackboard to digital board.
